The learning curve
The gains are not immediate. Learning to use a new technology can itself add hours to a task at first. Research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology shows that AI adoption in manufacturing initially decreases productivity before ultimately delivering long-term gains.
Economists describe that pattern with the "J-curve" model. The trajectory, shaped like the letter J, reflects the stretch of time when significant resources go into learning and investing in a new technology, with productivity dipping before it rises sharply.
