Census Data Shows How Much Time AI Saves at Work

About 55% of American workers say they use artificial intelligence on the job, and roughly one-third of those users report the tools cut one to two hours from the time needed to finish a given assignment, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The findings come from a weekly national Census Bureau survey of individuals and households that covers employment, food and nutrition, and transportation, among other topics.

Where the hours go

The reported time savings vary widely. One-quarter of employees who use AI at work said the tools shaved less than an hour off a task. Fifteen percent said AI cut three hours per task, and another 15% said it saved them four hours.

How workers use it

Workers said they turn to AI for writing, generating ideas, research and administrative work. The most common uses reported were:

• 37% search for information or technical help
• 32% write or draft text
• 32% generate ideas
• 31% interpret, translate or summarize information
• 27% administrative tasks
• 21% data analysis or visualization
• 16% tutoring or training
• 12% customer support

Smaller shares said they use AI to write code, for medical care, and to manage logistics or supply chains, according to the Census data.

The learning curve

The gains are not immediate. Learning to use a new technology can itself add hours to a task at first. Research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology shows that AI adoption in manufacturing initially decreases productivity before ultimately delivering long-term gains.

Economists describe that pattern with the "J-curve" model. The trajectory, shaped like the letter J, reflects the stretch of time when significant resources go into learning and investing in a new technology, with productivity dipping before it rises sharply.
