Clement's Go-Ahead RBI Lifts Blue Jays Past Red Sox 5-3

Ernie Clement drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, Brett Bateman knocked in two runs, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 5-3 on Tuesday night, extending Boston's losing streak to four games.

Toronto's George Springer walked to open the sixth and advanced to third on Alejandro Kirk's single before scoring on Clement's fielder's choice, putting the Blue Jays ahead for good.

Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu each hit solo home runs for Boston, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Red Sox's longest skid since a four-game slide from June 14-18.

Adley Rutschman, acquired from Baltimore at the trade deadline, made his Red Sox debut and went 1 for 3 with two walks. The three-time All-Star had not played since July 18 because of left wrist inflammation.

Chase Lee (1-0) recorded five outs for his first career win, and Spencer Miles picked up his first big league save. Boston starter Patrick Sandoval (1-1) allowed four runs, two earned, on eight hits over six innings.

Rafaela opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the third, but Toronto answered with Bateman's RBI double in the bottom half. Leadoff home runs from Abreu in the fourth and Rafaela in the fifth gave Boston a 3-1 lead.

The Blue Jays tied it in the fifth after third baseman Caleb Durbin's error allowed Myles Straw to reach base. Charles McAdoo drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Bateman added an RBI single. Straw later padded the lead with an RBI single off Seth Martinez in the eighth.

Toronto starter Dylan Cease allowed three runs and five hits, including both home runs, over five innings, walking four and striking out seven to raise his American League-leading total to 191. It was only the second time in his last 11 starts that he allowed multiple homers.

The Blue Jays send José Soriano (9-6, 3.24 ERA) to the mound Wednesday against Red Sox left-hander Ranger Suárez (4-3, 3.32).
