Rengifo's Grand Slam Off Ex-Team Lifts Padres Past Brewers 11-2

Luis Rengifo hit a grand slam against the Brewers on Tuesday night, seven weeks after Milwaukee released him, as the San Diego Padres beat baseball's best team 11-2 to win the series.

Fernando Tatis Jr. also hit a milestone homer, and Luis Campusano added a two-run shot for the Padres, who will go for a three-game sweep Wednesday behind trade deadline acquisition Robbie Ray. San Diego had lost two of three to Milwaukee in mid-May.

The win pulled the Padres into a tie with Philadelphia and Arizona for the third NL wild-card spot, their fourth straight victory and 14th in their last 18 games.

Rengifo was released by the Brewers on June 23 and signed a minor league deal with the Padres six days later, making his San Diego debut on July 10. He came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the second inning after Tatis had a strike call overturned into a walk. Rengifo then hit a 1-0 fastball from Kyle Harrison (9-3) into the left-field seats for a 5-0 lead — his third homer of the year.

Tatis hit an opposite-field shot to right leading off the fourth inning, his 164th career home run, moving him past Nate Colbert into sole possession of second place on the franchise list. He trails only teammate Manny Machado, who has 217. Tatis has 12 homers this season.

Walker Buehler (7-5) combined with two relievers on a six-hitter, earning his second win in his last eight starts. He allowed one run and three hits over six innings.

Harrison was tagged for eight runs and 10 hits — including all three homers — in 4 2/3 innings.

Brewers right-hander Dustin May (6-7, 4.30 ERA) is set to face left-hander Ray (10-7, 3.24) in Wednesday's series finale.
