UK Musical Cast Announces Dolly Parton's Death to Audience

Audience members at a performance of "9 to 5: The Musical" in Worthing, England, gasped aloud after a cast member announced Dolly Parton's death before Tuesday's show.

A video of the announcement, shared on social media by the venue, showed Karla Tracey — who plays the role originated by Parton in the 1980 film the musical is based on — addressing the crowd at the Pavilion Theatre.

"Before we begin tonight's performance of '9 to 5,' we would like to take a moment to remember the remarkable Dolly Parton, who has sadly passed away today," Tracey said. "'9 to 5' was originally produced by Dolly, whose extraordinary talent, creativity and spirit are woven into every part of this work."

Tracey told the audience the cast would "perform the piece as she intended, with great respect and affection for the woman whose vision brought it to life," adding, "Our thoughts are with Dolly's family, friends and all those around the world who loved and admired her."

The cast dedicated the night's performance to Parton "with our deepest thanks for the music, laughter and joy she gave us," Tracey said. The production continues at the Pavilion Theatre through Friday, according to Worthing Theatres and Museum, which manages the venue.

The organization also issued a statement honoring Parton, saying she was among the few artists who "have given the world so much joy," praising her achievements as a musician along with "her humour and her heart."

Parton died Tuesday at 80 after a brief battle with cancer, according to her team. She starred alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in the 1980 comedy "9 to 5," for which she wrote and performed the title song, later becoming a feminist anthem. She went on to serve as composer and lyricist for the stage musical adaptation.

Over her decadeslong career, Parton released nearly 50 studio albums, sold more than 100 million records, earned 55 Grammy nominations and won 10. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
