Tim Curry, ‘Rocky Horror’ Star, Dies at 80

Actor Tim Curry, best known for playing Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the cult classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," has died at 80, his longtime manager and friend Marcia Hurwitz confirmed.

Curry's representatives said in a statement that he died peacefully at his home in the Toluca Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles on Tuesday. Los Angeles police said a death investigation report was completed late Tuesday for an 80-year-old man at a home in Los Angeles, though they did not identify the body as Curry's. A cause of death has not been publicly revealed.

Beyond "Rocky Horror," Curry was widely remembered for playing Wadsworth in "Clue" and the evil clown Pennywise in the 1990 TV adaptation of Stephen King's "It." He also appeared as Rooster Hannigan in "Annie," Mr. Hector in "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" and Long John Silver in "Muppet Treasure Island."

Tributes poured in from collaborators. "Clue" director Jonathan Lynn, a lifelong friend, recalled Curry once saying it was "appropriate" that he was famous but not well known personally. Co-stars Lesley Ann Warren and Michael McKean, along with "Annie" co-star Carol Burnett and "Home Alone" co-star Rob Schneider, also shared condolences on social media.

Curry had dealt with health issues since suffering a major stroke in 2012 that left him partially paralyzed and unable to walk.

Born April 19, 1946, Curry built a career spanning more than five decades in film, television and theater, beginning onstage in the London production of "Hair." He won a Daytime Emmy in 1991 for voicing Captain Hook and earned three Tony nominations, including for originating roles in "Amadeus" and "Spamalot."

Last year, Curry published a memoir, "Vagabond," to mark the 50th anniversary of "Rocky Horror." He is survived by nieces Kate Lewis, Julia and Patrick Bullman, great-nieces Josephine and Georgina, and nephew Mark Lewis.
