Rams and Arsenal Owner Stan Kroenke to Buy Angels

Kroenke Sports and Entertainment announced Tuesday that it has reached a deal to buy the Los Angeles Angels from Arte Moreno, ending the businessman's 23-year, often turbulent ownership of the franchise. The transaction is expected to close in early 2027.

Stan Kroenke's company already owns the NFL's Los Angeles Rams, Arsenal of the English Premier League, the NBA's Denver Nuggets, the NHL's Colorado Avalanche, Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids and SoFi Stadium, along with the Hollywood Park campus around the Inglewood arena.

"The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market," Kroenke said in a statement. "We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization."

Moreno, an outdoor advertising magnate from Arizona, bought the Angels from the Walt Disney Company in 2003. The club had early success with much of the roster that won the 2002 World Series, but has declined since winning its most recent playoff game in 2009. The Angels are headed to their 11th straight losing season and 12th straight season without a playoff berth, both the longest active streaks in Major League Baseball.

The team made the playoffs only once during the career of three-time AL MVP Mike Trout, who played alongside two-time AL MVP Shohei Ohtani for six seasons without postseason success. Moreno repeatedly involved himself in personnel decisions, and many of his high-profile acquisitions failed to deliver.

The franchise also faced off-field troubles under Moreno, including the drug-related death of pitcher Tyler Skaggs. Fans, once loyal, grew impatient in recent years, with smaller crowds at Angel Stadium chanting "Sell the team!" this season.

Moreno publicly explored a sale in 2022 before pulling the team off the market in 2023. His children reportedly are not interested in continuing in the baseball business.

"The Moreno family has been honored to steward the Angels for 23 years, and we believe with KSE's experience and success, they are the best next owner for the franchise," Moreno said in a statement.
