Jeffries Vows 'Serious Response' After Democrats Back GOP Vote

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries vowed a "serious response" after two Democrats voted with Republicans on Tuesday to advance a procedural vote tied to a resolution condemning socialism.

Reps. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington and Jared Golden of Maine, both considered moderates, joined Republicans in advancing the measure. The resolution also included language backing enactment of President Donald Trump's SAVE America Act. Eight Democrats supported the underlying resolution.

Jeffries said the defections "represent a significant breach of trust" within the caucus, though he did not specify what response Democratic leadership might take against the two lawmakers.

The episode comes amid broader tension in Washington, as Trump escalates rhetoric over the conflict with Iran. The president on Tuesday suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz "Trump Strait," claiming the U.S. has control of the waterway despite an ongoing military confrontation with Iran. He has no legal authority to rename an international strait, and the claim follows earlier efforts to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer mocked the proposal on social media, writing that Americans "already call this entire fiasco TRUMP'S WAR" and accusing the president of prioritizing ego over addressing health care costs, gas prices and grocery bills.

Separately, Trump named acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao to the post permanently, as Democrats in Congress raise concerns that the Navy has been overtaxed by the Iran conflict. The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier recently completed a nine-month deployment that included a record 270 consecutive days at sea before docking in Thailand.

A new Gallup poll found 89% of surveyed U.S. adults believe government corruption is "widespread," the highest level measured in 20 years, according to the survey of 1,000 adults conducted in May and June.
