Indiana Widow Later Accused in Husband's Fatal Fall

Kevin Davis, 40, was found unconscious at the bottom of a steep staircase in his New Haven, Indiana, home in the early hours of August 12, 2023, with blood pooled around him. He was rushed to Parkview Regional Medical Center in critical condition and later died after his family agreed to remove life support and donate his organs.

His wife, Alison Davis, then 33, had given New Haven Police Department Detective James Krueger permission to search their home, warning officers about the couple's pit bull mix, Willow, who was upstairs and known to growl at strangers. Krueger initially declined to enter the bedroom where the dog was kept.

Bodycam footage captured officers at the scene describing heavy bleeding from Davis's face and nose. "The amount of blood, it was alarming. It was — it was everywhere," Krueger said.

After the search, Krueger lifted restrictions on the home, telling officers he believed Davis's death was the result of an accidental fall. "Maybe he took a head plant down the stairs. I don't know. I wasn't there," he said.

Alison's father, Steve Krause, said he received permission from Krueger to clean the blood from the home while his daughter remained at the hospital with Kevin. "It's very upsetting," Krause said of the process, adding that he sometimes had to stop and gather himself.

Friends of the couple, who were regulars at the East Haven Tavern, described Kevin as a hardworking landscaper with a big heart and said they were stunned by his death. Several told CBS News they assumed the death was accidental. "Nobody ever thought it was anything but a fall," said Jodi Espy, one of the bar's employees.

Alison Davis was later accused in her husband's killing, according to CBS News' "48 Hours," which first aired its investigation into the case on October 11, 2025.
