Baby Pulled Alive From Rubble After Colombia Earthquake

A baby was pulled alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in Cali, Colombia, on Monday night, according to video posted on social media by Brian Osorio Zuluaga.

The footage shows a group of men digging through debris with their bare hands after finding a survivor trapped beneath the wreckage. "I'm with a baby," the man can be heard saying in a muffled voice. As rescuers cleared pieces of concrete, muffled cries of a child became audible.

Another clip shows a man holding the crying infant, his arms covered in blood, while the lower half of his body remained trapped. Five men eventually freed the baby and called for a paramedic before breaking into cheers. A final video shows the group continuing efforts to free the adult who had shielded the child.

"Today I understood, more than ever, that no one is really prepared to live through a situation like the one we are experiencing today," Zuluaga wrote alongside the videos, adding that he had been among the first people at the site. "A helping hand can make the difference between life and death. In moments like this, differences don't matter, what matters is helping."

The conditions of the baby and the adult who held him were not immediately known.

Search teams and volunteers across Colombia are racing to find survivors still trapped under debris. President Abelardo de la Espriella, who had been in office only days when the disaster struck, said at least 181 people had died and 2,595 were injured; authorities in Cali later put the death toll at 216. Civilian-run databases estimate nearly 4,000 people remain unaccounted for.

The United States has pledged more than $15 million in aid, and Mexico's president said she is prepared to send hundreds of search and health workers along with tons of supplies. El Salvador's president, Nayib Bukele, said his country would send two planes carrying 100 tons of aid.
