Aitana's 'Superestrella' Becomes Surprise Latin Hit of the Summer

A song released more than a year ago by Spanish singer Aitana has become an unlikely summer anthem across the Spanish-speaking world, reaching No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart in early August.

"Superestrella" first appeared on Aitana's fourth album, Cuarto Azul, released in 2025. The Catalonia-born, Latin Grammy-winning artist rose to fame through the Spanish television competition Operación Triunfo — the same launching pad as fellow Catalan singer Amaia. Aitana has had several hits in Spain, but "Superestrella" marks her biggest success outside her home country.

"I never imagined that 'Superestrella' could go so far and connect with so many people outside Spain," Aitana told Billboard.

Spanish pop has traditionally stayed within Spain's borders, with only occasional crossover successes in Latin America from artists like Rosalía and Quevedo. "Superestrella," with its catchy hook and early-2000s party feel about falling for someone at a club, appears to be reaching further, playing in small shops and World Cup watch parties alike. Aitana performed the song at Spain's official World Cup victory celebration with the national team.

The song's rise also comes at a difficult moment for Latin America, following a year marked by natural disasters and political upheaval. Last year, Bad Bunny's album Debi Tirar Mas Fotos became his most popular release by directly addressing Puerto Rican independence and social issues. Similar concept-driven albums from artists including Karol G and Cazzu followed.

Against that backdrop, "Superestrella" offers listeners something different: an escape. Its lyrics — "It's not easy to fall in love with a superstar," Aitana sings on the chorus — invite listeners to imagine themselves somewhere more glamorous, if only for a few minutes.
